A Day Trip to Myanmar Burma.
This is a interesting journey
through a undiscovered
Muslim dominated stretch of scenic greenery along the Andaman
Sea between a low mountain range and the coast. Its Thailand's least populated area.

Phuket day trip to Ranong |
The hills behind the narrow coastal stretch attracts lots of rain since the clouds coming in from the
Indian Ocean drop their moisture. Actually this is the opposite direction as from Phuket to Krabi.
That means lot of rains all year around. The town of Myeik or Mergui as it was know under the British colonial time further up in Myanmar is one of wettest place on earth because of that.
Ranong is the main port on the west coast of Thailand, with a big fishing fleet. Every evening the refrigerator trucks start their rally to Bangkok to carry the fresh catch to markets.
There are 4 different religions in this area.

Phuket visa run |
Opposite is Kawthaung the gateway for trips into south Myanmar.
This are diving excursions via liveaboard
and also very popular
for the "Visa Run". That means if the visa expires make a tour
to Myanmar come back and get the new
immigration stamp into the passport.
|
Monastery island at Kawthaung |
Some companies offer day trips to handle this. The main company
offering this service runs a off
shore casino on the island close by.
They have their own
jetty at Ranong port plus Immigration office and carry you straight
to the hotel and casino, there you get a visa and also if you like
do some gambling.
The problem is the visa only allows to stay within the city limits of Kawthaung there was only one change recently (10 / 2013) which makes it possible to travel further into the country but that needs the official visa from their Bangkok Consulate. Which effectively means its useless, they should issue this at Kawthaung.
