Road Travel in south Thailand

To cruise the roads is mostly a positive experience with exceptions.

Surfaces are good and 4 lane highways are the majority on through roads, plenty of interesting and often strange scenes are coming up. As you can see at the picture below the people don't spend much thinking about what should be done relative to physical parameter, they just do what they imagine

Nobody cares about what are the consequences afterwards. A typical situation is a handful of people sitting in the loading bay of a open pick-up, having a crash and usually half of them die which happen almost every month but nobody stops it.

Another scenario up to 6 kids site on one scooter, maybe around 6 years old and are racing, they crash which is a rather normal thing, now what happen? If there is a car somehow involved but not as the one which caused the accident there is a 90% chance that the police blame the car driver although it is forbidden that the kids drive on a motorbike.

In the tourist destinations at any accident automatically the foreigners are blamed. Some time ago one local guy crashed into the car and it was clearly his problem because he try to pass me on the wrong side. The police guy at the station bluntly told me it won't matter what I say he only believe Thai people.

On the other side since most accidents are negotiated by the police and not by a law court there is the possibility to get out even in a difficult situation because it only becomes a matter how much to be paid.

The best for traveling are the buses.

They are good and comfortable although no very fast but carry low prices, e.g. from Phuket to Bangkok about $ 20,-, that is a 12 hour ride over 900 km.
